Week in Review: Snowstorm, Medical Marijuana, Fire Cleanup and More

Here's are some of the big stories that happened in Middletown the week of Jan. 9, 2011.

The big story of the week was certainly the snowstorm, which brought Middletown to a near standstill on Wednesday. But other issues made news as well, including the creation of a Middletown arts festival and the application for a medical marijuana center. Here's a look back at the past week's top news.

Committee Draws Up Plans for Town's First Arts Fest

At the first official meeting of the newly formed Committee for the Arts, the group tentatively set Aug. 20, 2011, as the date for the “Middletown Celebration of the Arts." The committee hopes to make the event an annual occurrence to showcase local artists and artisans. Read more here.

Middletown Doctor Seth Bock Reapplies for Medical Marijuana Center in Portsmouth

The state Department of Health has accepted 18 compassion center applications for review, including one from Dr. Seth Bock, who owns and operates the in Middletown. The application will be reviewed by the Department of Health next month. Read more here.

FYE Middletown Store Closure Brings Big Sale

Sadly, another “under-performing” national chain store is closing in Middletown. The F.Y.E. retail music store at the East Main Road Shaw’s shopping plaza will close "sometime at the end of the month," store employees confirmed. In the meantime, the store is having a big sale with discounts of 40  to 70 percent off. Read more here.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream Celebrated at Temple Shalom

In preparation for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, locals came together at Middletown's on Friday night for a special service to celebrate freedom and the life and vision of King. Read more here.

Businesses Adjusting as Tuesday Morning Closeouts Fire Cleanup Continues

Three local businesses at the West Main Road shopping plaza remain closed this week as cleanup crews continue to mitigate fire, smoke, and water damage sustained from the allegedly set by an arsonist at .  Bakery & Cafe and , the closest neighbors to Tuesday Morning, hoped to finish up remediation and reconstruction this week and reopen shortly thereafter.
