Top Racer in today's 5K Run for Education donates prize winnings to Heather Abbott Recover Fund. Heather Strong!!!

The rain cleared shortly before the scheduled start of the Newport Public Educaiton Foundation's ninth 5K Run For Education.

Locals were the top prize winners, David Palkovic of Middletown finishing first with a time of 17:20, and Lee Fontaine of Newport, the first female finisher, crossing the line at 19:22. Second place winner overall was Karl Mader of Walpole, MA. Today's top prize purse was $150.00 to the first male and female finishers.

David Palkovic, 20 years old, is currently a collegiate runner for CCRI and was unable to accept his prize due to prohibitions on collegiate athletes accepting money or payment for their performance.  David chose to donate his winning prize of $150.00 to the Heather Abbott Recover Fund.  Heather Abbott is a Newporter who was injured April 15, 2013 in Boston during the marathon bombings.

How can you donate something you are prohibited to accept for your performance?

Good for you, David. We don't know him. He may have wanted to do it anyway. Don't always look for an issue where this isn't one. Many folks would not have run if they knew they could not win a purse.
