Poll: Can a Porn Star Be a Teacher?

A Massachusetts English teacher has been suspended while the school considers what to do about his history in pornography.

A Massachusetts high school teacher who once starred in pornographic films has been placed on administrative leave while the school administration investigates his past.

According to the Boston Herald, the man is not only head of the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School English department, he was hired after a background check that included "superlative" references and criminal background checks in two states.

Also according to the Herald, school officials wrote in an e-mail to parents that if the allegations are true, the man should have revealed his past during the interview process.

What do you think? Is the teacher's history in pornography relevant to his current profession teaching high school English?

Jeff- You beat me to the punch. How is this different than asking if an underwear model can hold a job as a senator?
Ray Andrews December 01, 2011 at 12:04 AM
People have sex. When that becomes a disqualifier for employment then we've got real problems
michelle walton December 01, 2011 at 12:17 AM
Sure, but what if it was a woman?
Manifold Witness December 01, 2011 at 12:22 AM
This man's pornographic endeavors for profit as well as his failure to reveal it on his application violates RIGL § 16-12-3 "Duty to cultivate principles of morality. – Every teacher shall aim to implant and cultivate in the minds of all children committed to his or her care the principles of morality and virtue." And it doesn't make any difference whether he was the biggest, best darn pornography "star" ever or just so-so in the sack. Not all that is legal is moral. And you say he didn't "reveal" it on his application? There you go. He's still being immoral even with his clothes on. Throw the bum out.
Tonya Borello December 01, 2011 at 02:06 AM
His past escapes are completely irrelevant and does not affect his ability to do his job whatsoever. Perhaps he did that to pay for his education, got his degree and now wants a better life for himself. Who are you to decide what is moral. We have this tendency to point our holier then thou finger at everyone. Worry about what happens in your own circles and let the man teach! If he is effective as a teacher, I say teach away! (and the lady retracted her comment that I was just responding too. Perhaps she realized how she came across. Praise be to God.)

Teachers are role models and should be held to a higher standard. I really think it would be interesting if the teacher was a female. Would there be any question as to what the Harper Valley PTA would do?
Anthony Buono December 01, 2011 at 12:13 PM
If this were a woman, parents would be screaming for her dismissal. We live in a hypocritical society. Unless, he lied or was deliberately deceptive, his past legal activities are irrelevant.

he was hired after a background check that included "superlative" references and criminal background checks in two states. He passed his background checks in 2 states. What he does in his private life is no one's business. If he was a gay porn star I doubt if anyone is Massachusetts would blink twice.

So should we fire every teacher that has ever had premarital sex, experimented with drugs, drinks socially, etc...? I don't know this man's opinion of his former occupation, but I think he can be a great role model to show that we can move beyond choices we've made in the past. Should we hold back every person who has had issues with alcoholism or prostitution or what have you? Sorry, you didn't uphold "society's values" your whole life so we're done with you as being a productive member of society EVER! Doesn't matter if male or female it is not relevant to his current life. Parents who seek his dismissal better realize the hard road they are setting their kids up on if they ever make a "moral mistake".

Manifold...exactly what does a Rhode Island General Law have to do with a teacher in Mass?????
Stanley Farak December 01, 2011 at 02:05 PM
I believe the Harper Valley PTA members had a lot of skeletons in their closets too!!! ie.. Sally Thompson, Mr. and Mrs, Taylor, and the widow Jones. Good song though...show's our hippocracy.

It would address the question: Can a porn "star" be a teacher in RI?
Manifold Witness December 01, 2011 at 02:56 PM
There a lot of questions to explore. The "legal" "porn star" was or was not a "productive member of society"? His most recent choice to omit the information from the application - relevant to his "current life" or not? Did he make "a" moral mistake? One "moral mistake"? Is that what is at issue here? "Society's values"? Or is that term now oxymoronic and not to be upheld? "Mom to twins" could fully explore his "opinion of his former occupation"? Is that the operative standard? He's a great role model? To help teach your children about the easy "pc" road where "morals" and "values" are the new dirty words? Isn't the educational system in the USA bad enough as it is? How low will it go? Will "porn" experience improve the system? Hey, look how far "the industry" had come - we now easily accept "porn" as a word we put in headlines & here on tv all the time & chat about with the kiddies, right? Have fun discussing.
pferd December 01, 2011 at 03:07 PM
we had a president that tried to be a porno star named clinton and he was allowed to continue, so why cruzify a teacher. clinton's activities were posted on tv and news for everyone to see and we made excuses. so leave the teacher alone. i am sure if the board had a background check they all had some dirt on them.
John Pearl December 01, 2011 at 03:26 PM
@Manifold: the statute says every teacher "shall aim to" cultivate morality. That's forward looking language, having nothing to do with the teacher's past. Many people have done things in their past that are legal but not socially embraced (Gingrich cheating on his wife by having affair with a House staff aid, for example). That doesn't mean that... going forward... he can't "aim to" cultivate morality. You say he didn't reveal it on his application -- so what. He was not required to reveal it, because it is not relevant work history for a job as a teacher, just like I'm not going to list that time in my early 20s when I had a job as a waiter at Howard Johnson's on any job application I might do for a software position.

"If he was a gay porn star I doubt if anyone is Massachusetts would blink twice." Ha Ha... very funny, but... He was a gay porn star. It's not pointed out in this Patch article, but google the news item and you'll see. Apparently, Massachusetts went ahead and blinked twice any way.

Ron Jeremy was a teacher before he changed careers. Of course the roles are reveresed here. Wonder what was the reading material at night?
boss the hogg December 01, 2011 at 05:35 PM
An internet search revealed his screen name as Hytch Cawke and starred in gay porno.
Phil Bergin December 01, 2011 at 05:55 PM
I guess he would teach a pretty good sex education class. Seriously though, once the kids that he is teaching find some of his films or even find out his history, how effective will he be as a teacher? I just think the issue of his past will overshadow his teaching abilities.
Janine B December 01, 2011 at 06:26 PM
There is nothing about his employment in the porn industry relevant to his teaching. I'm not saying it was the best decision, but does this mean he can't be anything but? If your children make mistakes are you going to teach them that that is the end of it? Can people never rise above past problems? "Manifold Witness", Sorry to hear that in your world morals and values are dirty words now, nothing I said demonstrated that. I also did not say that his former occupation should be the role model for children, I said that moving beyond past choices and becoming something else can be the model. What is wrong with teaching our children values, but leaving room for forgiveness and compassion down the road. It's not like I'm going to say "Don't steal, but if you do it's okay it really doesn't matter".
Janine B December 01, 2011 at 06:27 PM
Phil, that is the best argument I have read about how this may affect his current job. Good point.

I don't know how I feel about it. He should have disclosed it on his resume, this so called "honest"and not illegal job. If he had, it would have been a very different story. But he didn't. He foolishly thought he could make 3 adult films within the last year, and then go back to teaching in a public school. He did not give the school the courtesy of this information, and now he'll have to suffer the consequences. I think now that the information is out, and the frenzy has begun, I don't think he can properly teach in or control his class room. I think this news creates too much distraction and trashes his credibility with the school, the parents, and the students. I don't necessarily object to a former porn star teaching in a school, but I do wish we had higher standards than "nothing illegal" for certain professions, especially those involving out children.

I feel bad that this person will have to now deal with a scituation that was created by someone discovering something in this man's past. It would seem that he intended to try and do better by becoming a teacher in the first place. So lets put this in perspective, am I to understand that no one has ever done anything in their past that would be questionable in todays standards, I think not. There is not a person walking this planet that hasn't done something that they may be ashamed of or is questionable to someone else. This article however will have nothing but a negative outcome for this individual regardless.

What people do on their own time is their own damn business! This country is fast becoming a dictatorship. We have more laws on the books than any other country. The reality is that we are NOT free, we ARE guilty until proven innocent, we do NOT have the right to free speech, we do NOT have the right to freedom of expression, and the federal, state, and local governments all have a microscope up our ass!
Larry A. Wilske June 13, 2012 at 04:19 PM
Simply put if someone is guilty of a crime of moral terpitude then they are exempt from being in a position of public service. So this is a question of something, while not illegal, being immoral enough to meet a legal threshold. On the free to be you and me side of things the answer is a simple, "what they do with their clothes off is their business". The other (and arguably more importannt) side is if someone has the misguided moral judgement to be in porn movies, is this the person we want guiding, mentoring and educating our youth? To answer this (if it's not completely obvious), I'd suggest doing a couple of things: 1. Look your children in the eye and decide if they want someone with the morals of an alley cat mentoring them. 2. Ask your priest/pastor/minister/rabbi what they think. 3. Wake up, because you've wasted asking yourself a dumb-ass question. Yes it matters! No they should not be allowed!
