Alleged Street Race Ends in Arrests

The following arrests were reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Two 24-year-old women were arrested Sunday after they allegedly crashed into a car and assaulted the driver while racing another vehicle on West Main Road.

Kira Clarke, of 36 Harvest Road, Middletown, was charged for with second offense drag racing/reckless driving, a felony and for throwing articles at a moving vehicle, a misdemeanor. Shirley Thurber, of 82 Bacon St., Pawtucket was charged with three misdemeanors: simple assault, vandalism and disorderly conduct.

A 48-year-old Middletown man said Clarke was racing another car, cut him off, and then threw an Arizona Iced tea can at his car. He said the liquid froze on his windshield, so he switched to the right lane in order to slow down. The man said Clarke cut him off again, and struck his vehicle on the driver’s side door.

Police said they stopped and confronted Clarke in a “heated rage” and dialed 911.  Thurber, who was reportedly a passenger in the car, got out and allegedly punched the man in the ear, kicked his car and threw iced coffee on him.

Police said both cars had visible damage.
