A Saturday afternoon head-on collision on Aquidneck Avenue between a car and chartered passenger van left eight injured, including a local Portsmouth woman who was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and later released for head and other minor injuries.
The crash occurred Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 2:34 pm on Aquidneck Avenue near Newman Road, according to police reports, when a southbound 2008 Hyundai driven by Maureen Viti, of Portsmouth, attempted a left turn and collided with a northbound 2001 Ford passenger van owned by Lands End Limo and operated by David J. Borges, both of Middletown.
Middletown Police said Borges sought hospital treatment on his own forearm injuries sustained during the crash, in which both the driver and passenger-side airbags deployed. The seven van passengers who also reportedly experienced non-life threatening injuries included Lex Van Dam and Natasha Levinzon, along with five minors. Police said all had been wearing lap seat belts when the crash occurred.
Viti, whose air bag deployed, sustained injuries to her head and arms, and suffered a fractured thumb, police reported. Emergency workers transported her to Rhode Island hospital from the scene. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
