Woman's Sob Story Ends In Marijuana Arrest

The following arrests were reported during the weekend of Friday, May 20, to Sunday, May 22.

A Fall River woman who allegedly told police her eyes were bloodshot and glossy from crying was arrested for marijuana possession early Sunday morning.

Melinda Cordeiro 19, of 862 Robeson St., Apt. #1, Fall River, Mass., was arrested around 1:36 a.m. Sunday on a misdemeanor first offense charge of marijuana possession.

According to the arrest report, Middletown police stoppd her car on West Main Road near Dexter Street after observing the car cross the road’s center line.

During questioning, police at the scene observed bloodshot, glossy eyes. Cordeiro told police she had been crying and was driving to clear her head. However, police became suspicious and found cause to search the vehicle upon seeing a plastic bag that allegedly contained marijuana in the rear seat in plain view. Cordeiro told police it belonged to a friend, according to the arrest report.

The suspect was also cited for driving into the other lane of traffic, police reported.

The Middletown Police Department reported two other arrests over the weekend:

  • Cristy L. Jones, 32, of 697 Jepson Lane, Middletown, was arrested around 9:50 p.m. Saturday on a misdemeanor charge of domestic assault.  According to the arrest report, Jones met with her estranged husband in the Middletown High School parking lot around 8 p.m. earlier that evening to discuss final terms of their divorce involving their children. The man told police that when he informed Jones that his new girlfriend had met the children that day, Jones allegedly began to strike and scratch at his face. He left the scene and later reported the incident to police, noting that Jones later called him to apologize. Police who took his statement observed bleeding and scratch marks on the man’s face below his eye, according to the arrest report.
  • Police arrested Andrew Tuele Dupree, 20, of 117 Lake Erie Street, Middletown, around 1 a.m. early Saturday morning on a misdemeanor bench warrant issued from the Sixth District Court in Providence for allegedly failing to appear to pay court costs. According to the arrest report, Middletown police were investigating a hit and run case at the time and questioned Dupree, who was seated as a passenger in a parked car that had matching characteristics of the vehicle being sought.
