Middletown Arrests: Assault and Vandalism, Cocaine Possession

The following information is based on Middletown Police Department reports. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

arrested two men were Monday night after an altercation that allegedly involved a knife.

Dillon Adams, 18, of 20 Cogndon Ave, Newport, was arrested on two misdemeanor charges of simple assault and vandalism. Michael Daponte, of 31 Harbor Village Drive, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

Police were dispatched to 31 Harbor Village Dr. at approximately 8:10 p.m., Monday, April, 16, where they were told Adams was in possession of a knife and had left the area in the direction of the Kennedy School. Adams was reportedly with his 16-year-old girlfriend.

The girlfriend’s mother said that earlier that evening her daughter and Adams were arguing on the phone. Adams allegedly came to the residence and continued arguing with the teenager outside.

Daponte, the girlfriend’s brother, told police he went outside to see what was happening. According to the police reports, Daponte and Adams began arguing, and a knife was allegedly shown. Police said it could not be determined who had the knife at that time.

The two were separated by the girlfriend and her mother. The mother told police that Adams then ran up from behind and pushed her to the ground. Adams then allegedly began fighting with Daponte.

The two were reportedly separated again by the mother and a neighbor, who forced Daponte into the hallway. Adams then allegedly ran up to the front door of the hallway and hit the window frame with his fist and broke it, in an attempt to get Daponte.

The girlfriend told police Adams did not push her mother, but did it to save her. She told police Daponte had the knife and threatened Adams. Adams told police he believed that Daponte was going to stab the girlfriend, which is why he tackled both the mother and Daponte.

The mother filled out a witness statement and told police she wanted to press charges against Adams for assault. The head of maintenance stated they wished to press charges for damage to the property. Police also contacted DCYF.

Daponte complained of head injuries and was transported to Newport Hospital. He was treated for a concussion and a small broken bone in his skull.

He was released to police and charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. Adams was charged with two misdemeanors, simple assault and vandalism.
