Middletown Driver Allegedly Fatally Hits Pedestrian in Wheelchair

Robert Silvia, 56, died Wednesday night after he was struck by a car while crossing the road in his wheelchair.

A 56-year-old Newport man died from injuries Wednesday night after he was hit by a vehicle in a crosswalk on Friday, Jan. 17, according to Newport Police Sgt. Christopher Hayes.

Robert Silvia, a resident at Chapel Terrace, was crossing Memorial Boulevard at Chapel Street in his wheelchair, when he was stuck by a 31-year-old Middletown driver, said Hayes. 

The driver was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and for driving without insurance. Police are investigating possible criminal charges, said Hayes. 

The case is under investigation by the Newport Police Department.  Patch will provide details as they are made available.
