Middletown Families Stoked for Wednesday Night Bonfire

The real treat waits for those kids who stay to the very end and get to hold the fire hose to help firefighters put out the massive bonfire.

Summer is winding down and Middletown residents have only two chances left to catch one of the Second Beach bonfires that have become such a big hit among families this season.

"It's a great event. The Substance Abuse Task Force comes out to do face painting for the kids and other community organizations really come out to participate too," said Middletown Parks and Recreation Director Timothy Shaw after the last bonfire. "There's only two left this summer, it's a great time, so come on down!"

The free event will take place on Wednesday night from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The town's final bonfire will take place the Wednesday before Labor Day, said Shaw.

So far, Middletown's beach bonfires have been popular among families, drawing a crowd of 50-100 people during the most recent outing on July 16, 2010. In addition to a massive 12-foot wide entrenched bonfire, the town Parks and Recreation Department and other organizations provide fun activities for the kids, such as face painting, coloring booths, and games.

A blaze that size also lights up the beach quite nicely for residents to enjoy the beach at night after the heat of the day has let up a bit.

Of course, the Middletown Fire Department will again be on hand to ensure a safe evening for all to enjoy.

And the real treat and little known secret will happen after most people have gone.

The firefighters usually let those kids (and adults) who stay until the very end hold the fire hose to douse the massive fire, setting off a thick cloud of sizzle, pop and steam that turns into a whole new event in and of itself.

Now that's a fire!
