Middletown Police Log: Car Stops Bring Two Weekend Arrests

The Middletown Police Department reported the following incidents. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

Marijuana

Michelle Sando, 21, of 24 Ellen Lane, Tiverton, was arrested around 4:07 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, and was charged with a misdemeanor first offense of marijuana possession.

According to the Middletown Police Department report, a police officer questioned the driver after observing the car traveling at a high rate of speed on a nearly flat tire before pulling into the East Main Road Shell gas station, and then observing the passengers make furtive movements inside the car when they saw police.

The officer detected the odor or marijuana inside the car during questioning. When asked if there was marijuana inside the car, Sando, a passenger, turned over her purse, which contained a bag of marijuana and a grinder, according to the police report.

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

Amy Santos, 38, of 50 Park Place, Burrillville, was arrested around 2:07 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20.

According to the police report, an officer observed her car stopped at the intersection of Squantum Drive and West Main Road at a green light in the turn lane, but remained stopped instead of making the turn. The car eventually made the turn and the police officer followed behind before observing it remain stopped at a second green light. The car then abruptly made a u-turn when the police officer pulled the car over near Squantum Drive.

During questioning, the police officer detected the odor of alcohol inside the car and observed Santos to have mumbled speech. Santos was arrested after portions of a field sobriety test were conducted at the scene. Santos allegedly refused to perform the walk and turn test, according to the police report.

She was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test to measure her blood-alcohol concentration (BAC), driving with a suspended license and for stopping her car where prohibited.
