Middletown Police Log: Domestic Assault, Marijuana Charges Reported

Marijuana Possession

Brian Stephen Couto, 32, of 155 Winston St., New Bedford, MA, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of first offense marijuana possession around 1:54 a.m. Monday morning.

According to the arrest report, police stopped the car Couto was driving for allegedly speeding on West Main Road at 52 mph in a posted 35 mph zone.

During questioning, the police officer allegedly detected the odor of marijuana and observed broken up bits of marijuana on Couto’s lap. Couto then allegedly handed over to police a glass jar with marijuana inside. Police later also seized a glass pipe and silver tin with marijuana in both. Police also cited Couto for speeding.

Domestic Assault, Breaking and Entering

Juan R. Garcia, 22, of 1212A West Main Road, Middletown, was arrested around 7:50 p.m. Saturday night on a felony charge of domestic breaking and entering and domestic simple assault.

According to the arrest report, responded to a call from an 18-year-old Middletown woman who reported that someone was attempting to break into her home through a window.

Upon arrival, police found Garcia walking away from the scene. The woman told investigators that Garcia allegedly had entered the home through a window following an argument they had earlier in the evening that involved their 9-month-old son. She also alleged that he had grabbed her and shoved her in the chest before she yelled to a friend to call police for help. Newport police also provided assistance at the scene.
