Middletown Police Log: Officers Arrest 3 for Drunk Driving

The following information is based on Middletown Police Department reports. Arrests do not indicate any convictions.

The reported three recent arrests for drunk driving.

  • William M. Schorkopf, 48, of 12 Harbor Village Drive, Apt. #3, Middletown, was arrested around 3:18 a.m. Tuesday morning on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a first offense misdemeanor. According to the arrest report, a police officer observed Schorkopf’s truck broken down on the side of the road on Valley Road near West Main Road. During questioning, a police officer at the scene detected the smell of alcohol and observed bloodshot and glassy eyes. He was arrested after a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene. Schorkopf also was cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test to measure blood-alcohol concentration (BAC).
  • Joseph L. Hyatt, 56, of 59 John H. Chaffee Blvd., Apt. 301, Newport, was arrested around 2:17 a.m. Tuesday morning on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a first offense misdemeanor. According to the arrest report, a patrol officer stopped the car Hyatt was driving on West Main Road near the intersection of Oliphant Lane after observing the car traveling at 52 mph in a posted 35-mph zone. During questioning, a police officer at the scene detected the smell of alcohol and observed bloodshot, glossy eyes and a spilled Budweiser beer bottle in the rear floor behind the driver’s seat that later was recovered and 25 percent filled with beer. He was arrested after a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene. A BAC chemical test conducted at the Middletown Police Station allegedly registered .126 and .129. Hyatt also was cited for allegedly speeding in excess of 15 mph above the posted speed limit, having an open alcohol container while driving, and improper display of license plates.
  • Kimberly Ann Bateman, 45, of 12 Donna Ave., Portsmouth, was arrested around 9:23 p.m. Tuesday night on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a first offense misdemeanor, with a BAC of .15 or greater. According to the arrest report, a police officer observed the car she was driving allegedly cross over the roadway lines and nearly collide with another vehicle in the next lane. Her car was stopped on the 900 block of Aquidneck Avenue. During questioning, a police officer at the scene detected the smell of alcohol and observed bloodshot, glossy eyes, a flushed face and slurred speech. She was arrested after a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene. A BAC chemical test conducted at the Middletown Police Station allegedly registered .254 and .249. She also was cited for driving outside the roadway lines.
