Middletown Police Log: Two Drivers Arrested Over Weekend

The reported the following charges were filed during the weekend of Friday, July 29, through Sunday, July 31:
Eluding Police, Driving Without A License
A 17-year-old male Newport youth was charged with reckless driving/ drag racing/eluding police, and with driving without a license/expired license, both misdemeanor charges, around 10 p.m. Saturday.

According to the police report, a patrol officer observed the suspect's car moving on Green Lane at a high rate of speed while turning its lights on and off. The police officer attempted to pull the car over on West Main Road, but the driver allegedly sped up, slowed down and took several turns on various roads before additional police cruisers from the Middletown and Newport police departments stopped the car in Hillside Avenue.
Police reported that three teens were in the vehicle and that the 17-year-old driver told police he had borrowed the car from a relative but did not have a license. The relative confirmed he had loaned the car to the youth, but told police he thought the driver was licensed to drive when he loaned the car to him.

DUI
Edward G. Simonetti, 51, of 1102 Fairway Drive, Middletown, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor first offense, around 3:53 p.m. Sunday.
According to the police report, police responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident without injuries on West Main Road near the intersection of Oliphant Lane. The police officer at the scene alleged smelling alcohol when he was questioning the suspect and observing bloodshot, glossy eyes and flushed skin.
Police charged Simonetti after a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene. Simonetti was later transported to Newport Hospital for a blood test to measure his blood-alcohol concentration, which Simonetti requested, according to the police report.
