North Kingstown Man Allegedly Assaulted Off-Duty Middletown Officer at The Landing

The following arrest information was supplied by the Newport Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

David M. Garnett, 37, of 49 Barrington Road, North Kingstown, was arrested around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday for allegedly assaulting an off-duty Middletown police officer.

Police were dispatched to for an assault report.

According to reports, the officer said he was inside talking to a friend when Garnett began to instigate a fight. He recognized Garnett, as he had arrested him a few weeks prior.

Garnett also recognized the officer, and reportedly said, “You’re that cop that arrested me.” Several witnesses said Garnett then grabbed him by the throat and threw him to the ground.

The officer punched back in self-defense and was later taken to Newport Hospital for his injuries, and later reported that he suffered a broken hand.

According to reports, witnesses said Garnett had been causing problems with several patrons, and the victim’s friend said he did not know Garnett, nor why he approached him to begin with.
