Officials Search For Tenant After House Fire on Prudence Island

Members of the Portsmouth Fire Department are battling a structure fire on Prudence Island this morning.

Portsmouth fire crews battled a fast-moving house fire on Prudence Island this morning. The blaze completely destroyed the single-family home on Concord Avenue. 

Police are currently searching for Shannon Cabellas, a man who was renting the property, according to The Sakonnet Times. 

Police detectives and members of the Rhode Island Fire Marshal's Office are currently on scene investigating this fire. The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) was also called to the island Tuesday to assist with the investigation.

The cause of the blaze is unknown. It is also unknown if anyone was inside the residence at the time of the fire.

The property is owned by Robert McNamara, according to Vision Appraisal.

"The investigation is ongoing," said Capt. Michael O'Brien, spokesman for the Portsmouth Fire Department. "The house is fully destroyed." 

The fire, located at 0151 Concord Ave., Prudence Island, began around 7:40 a.m., reports The Sakonnet Times. The house is located off Broadway on the island's west side. Crews were immediately called to the scene. 

"The house is fully engulfed in flames," said O'Brien around 8:30 a.m. 

Both crews from the Prudence Island Volunteer Fire Department and Portsmouth Fire Department were still extinguishing "hot spots" as of 9:53 a.m. Tuesday. There were no reports of injuries among responders. 

National Grid was also called to the island for a report of "live wires down" near the structure. There was also a report of a propane tank located near the flames.
