Patrol Stops Net Four Weekend Arrests

Middletown police reportedly arrested four individuals on drug and alcohol charges, plus one burglary suspect on an outstanding warrant, during the weekend of Sept. 17-19, 2010.

Middletown police reported four arrests from the weekend of Sept. 17 through the morning of Sept. 20, 2010, in which most were related to drugs and alcohol charges and one incident involved an oustanding arrest warrant for a burglary investigation.

  • On Sunday around 2:30 pm, Middletown police arrested John Vance Williams, 56, of 985 East Main Road, Unit 29, Middletown, on charges of disorderly conduct, assault and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors, after responding to witnesses who complained they saw Williams allegedly urinating at a bus stop near the Newport Mart convenience store. Police who arrived at the scene described Williams as being "uncooperative" and reportedly saw him in the street obstructing traffic as the patrol car approached.  Williams' companion reportedly told police the two men had been drinking that afternoon. Police also allege that Williams approached police in an aggressive manner, which prompted police to subdue him, and that Williams kicked an officer in the shins and struck him in the eye with a lighter.
  • Anthony Lema, 54, of 34 Radcliffe Avenue, Providence, was arrested Sunday around 3:45 pm on felony narcotics charges for alleged possession of crack cocaine and driving without a license after police on patrol stopped Lema's 1994 BMW on Maple Avenue near Sherman Road for allegedly failing to stop at a stop sign, according to police reports. A records check revealed that Lema had been arrested "multiple times" for driving without a license and that the BMW was not registered, police stated. Lema was transported to police headquarters for processing, where a search  allegedly revealed a "small crack pipe" in the pocket of his jeans while a small bag of crack cocaine turned up during a search of Lema's registration folder from his car, police reported. Besides the charges of cocaine possession and driving without a license, Lema was also cited for driving without proof of insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign.
  • Kenneth Alexander Jenkins, 43, of 1 Admiralty Drive, Apt. #12, Middletown, was arrested Sunday around 1:40 am and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police stopped his car on West Main Road near Valley Road, after a patrol officer reportedly observed his car cross the street's center line on several occasions. Police at the scene allege that Jenkins failed a physical field sobriety test. He was arrested and also charged with refusing to tale a preliminary Breathalyzer test and a chemical test to determine his blood-alcohol levels.
  • Andrew D. Turcotte, 18, of 119 Colebrook Road, Little Compton, was arrested Saturday around 11:35 am when police stopped his car on Valley Road near Johnnycake Hill Road after a check on his vehicle showed the registered owner had a warrant out for his arrest. The officer at the scene arrested Turcotte on an outstanding warrant issued by the Portsmouth Police Department involving an alleged break-in and burglary case involving a commercial property, according to Middletown police reports.
