Police Logs: Providence Sex Offender Arrested on Registry Charge

Middletown police reported seven arrests over the weekend of Friday, Dec. 10 through Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010. Police also reported an additional arrest from Thursday, Dec. 9, for which arrests had been previously reported.

  • Bernard Daymon Jones, 48, of 341 Plain St Apt #3, Providence, was arrested Sunday around 11:09 a.m. on two outstanding arrest warrants issued by the 6th District Court in Providence and a felony arrest warrant issued by the Providence Police Department for his alleged failure to register as a sex offender. Middletown police who knew that Jones was wanted by Providence police reportedly stopped a car they recognized to be that of a known associate of Jones on West Main Road in the Burger King parking lot near Coddington Highway. Jones was found to be riding inside as a passenger during the stop, police reported.
  • Bret L. Whitecross, 24, of 11 New Road, Chepachet, was arrested around 2:28 a.m. Sunday on a misdemeanor first offense charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and refusing to submit to a chemical test to measure blood-alcohol content (BAC). According to the arrest report, police stopped his 2004 maroon Ford Taurus on West Main Road near Rogers Lane after allegedly observing the car cross the central lane divider line on "several occasions." A check of the car's registration also came back matching a different vehicle, police reported. Police at the scene allege they performed a field sobriety test, conducted a preliminary BAC breath test that registered a .141 BAC and recovered a half-pint of whiskey from under the car seat. Besides the DUI charges, Whitecross also received citations for a laned roadway infraction and for having alcohol present while driving.
  • Peter A. Maloney, 23, of 112 Evans Ave., Tiverton, was arrested Saturday around 11:46 p.m. on a felony charge of cruelty to /or neglect of a minor and domestic simple assault and battery after police investigated a 911 emergency hang-up call at 1659 West Main Road. Police who arrived on scene reported they interviewed a 23-year-old woman visibly upset with "fresh red marks" on her shoulders, upper arms and back. According to the arrest report, the woman had been working that night and came home to find that six children ranging in ages of 9 months to 7 years old had been left alone while Maloney allegedly was next door drinking alcohol with neighbors. When the woman confronted him, they argued and he became physical with her, she reportedly told police but provided few details and declined to report the domestic violence incident. Besides the visible marks on the woman's body, police reportedly observed scratch marks on Maloney's face when they questioned him. The state Department of Children and Families was reportedly notified of the incident. Maloney was held pending his arraignment the next morning.
  • Derick P. Silva, 25, of 1130 Prospect St., Somerset, MA, was arrested Saturday around 2:17 p.m. on an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Second District Court in Newport. According to the arrest record, police stopped Silva's green Toyota Camry at the intersection of East Main Road and Aquidneck Avenue after a check of his license plate turned up the outstanding arrest warrant.
  • James McGowan, 30, of 253 Meadow Lane, Middletown, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic disorderly conduct after police responded to a call regarding a disturbance at his address. A female relative at the scene who called police alleged that McGowan was intoxicated and threw a television to the floor after she asked him to leave.
  • A 17-year-old Middletown youth was arrested on a first offense misdemeanor marijuana possession charge Friday night around 9:37 p.m. after police responded to a motor vehicle accident at 205 Chases Lane. Police allege they recovered three "roaches" in the front ashtray, a "piece of marijuana" under the driver's seat, and a "full marijuana blunt" near the passenger side door. The youth reportedly refused medical treatment at the scene, was processed and charged, and later released to a parent.
  • Ryan N. Alves, 20, of 24 Bayview Ave., Portsmouth, was arrested Thursday night around 10:56 p.m. on a first offense misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession after police stopped his silver 2004 Jeep Cherokee on West Main Road near Marshall Lane after observing a brake light out. Police at the scene reportedly smelled marijuana coming from his car. After questioning, police allegedly recovered eight small clear bags of marijuana from Alves' center console. A field test on the substance tested positive for marijuana, police reported.
