Speeding Ticket Leads to Marijuana Arrest

The Middletown Police Department reported one arrest from early Thursday morning.

A Massachusetts man stopped for speeding early Thursday morning also ended up charged with marijuana possession.

According to the , Derick Paul Silva, 25, of 1130 Prospect St., Somerset, Mass., was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, his first offense.

Middletown police stopped the car he was driving around 1:12 a.m. on West Main Road near Rocky’s Hardware for allegedly speeding at 40 miles per hour in a posted 25 mph zone. While one officer was in his police car running a routine background check on Silva, a Newport Police Department officer providing assistance said he observed Silva shoving something down the front of his pants. Silva allegedly told them he was hiding a small amount of marijuana, then retrieved the bag and handed it over to police.

He was held overnight at the Middletown Police Station pending his arraignment on Thursday morning. He was also cited for speeding, according to the arrest record.
