Middletown Assists Tiverton to Battle House Blaze

Correction: Patch has learned a firefighter was injured during Saturday's house fire response. We previously reported there were no injuries. A separate article on this update will be posted Monday.

Tiverton firefighters responded to reports of a house fire Saturday night on Main Road.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., the Tiverton Fire Department received a call for smoke in the basement of an occupied home at 148 Main Road.

The members assigned to Station 2 in the north end were currently out on a rescue call with Rescue 2 which left that station empty. The station is two blocks from the fire scene.

Crews from Crandall Road and South Tiverton responded. Off-duty firefighter Lt. Joseph Plocica responded from his home and found heavy smoke pushing from the basement and first floor.

He called on his department radio and reported a working structure fire. He then assisted the residents with escaping the home.

The fire progressed to the first floor and a second alarm was transmitted to bring additional resources to fight the fire. Units from Portsmouth, Fall River, and Westport responded to assist Tiverton Fire Department. Swansea, Middletown and Little Compton provided additional station coverage.

A ladder truck from Fall River also responded and had to cut the roof to let the heat and smoke out of the building so firefighters could extinguish the blaze.

The fire was eventually extinguished. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
