Weekend Arrests: Middletown Police Report DUI, Marijuana Arrests

The following incidents are based on reports provided by the Middletown Police Department and do not indicate a conviction.

Middletown police officers arrested eight people over the weekend, for offenses including drunk driving, underage drinking and domestic assault.

Driving Under the Influence

  • Audrey Lee Strycharz, 34, of 102 Grandview Ave., Johnston, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a first offense, around 3:13 a.m. Monday morning. According to the arrest report, police stopped her car on West Main Road near the Forest Avenue intersection after observing it allegedly speeding. Strycharz was charged after a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene. She was also cited for refusal to take a chemical test to measure blood-alcohol concentration, driving outside the roadway lanes and speeding, according to the arrest record.
  • Michael James McVicker, 49, of 84 Chatsworth Ave., Larchmont, NY, was arrested with on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a first offense, around 1:15 a.m. Sunday morning. According to the arrest report, police stopped his car near the Aquidneck Avenue and Purgatory Road intersection after observing it allegedly speeding. He was charged after a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene. He was also cited for refusal to take a chemical test to measure blood-alcohol concentration, driving without proof of insurance and speeding, according to the arrest record.

Receiving Stolen Goods and Marijuana Possession

Joseph M. Bates, 18, of Reardon Drive, Middletown, was arrested around 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning on misdemeanor charges of receiving stolen goods and marijuana possession.

According to the arrest report, a patrol officer observed him behaving suspiciously in an evasive manner when he noticed the police officer in a parking lot at Aquidneck Shopping Center. The police officer alleged that during questioning Bates turned away in an apparent attempt to hide something in his right hip pocket and the police officer ordered him to place his hands on his head to be checked for weapons.

During a pat-down, the officer felt a large bulge that felt like small metallic round objects, which Bates said were beads for making jewelry. When the police officer pulled the beads from his pocket, a small plastic bag of marijuana came with it, according to the police report. Bates also allegedly confessed to stealing the beads from Michael’s Crafts store earlier that day, valued at about $43, the police report stated.

Marijuana and Underage Drinking
Middletown police arrested three North Kingstown men on charges of marijuana possession and underage drinking after responding to noise complaints involving a house party Friday night on Warren Avenue, where a musician had been performing using an amplifier and guitar. According to the arrest report, police charged Kyle M. Hoegen, 20, of 41 Briarbrook Drive, North Kingstown, Andrew C. Rugg, 19, of 10 Park Place, North Kingstown, and Michael J. Parente, 19, of 60 Suffolk Drive, North Kingstown, each with the two misdemeanor charges and released them with July 8 District Court dates after investigating a noise complaint at 18 Warren Ave.

The three men allegedly admitted to drinking beer and having marijuana in their possession, which was turned over to police, according to the arrest reports.

Domestic Assault
Evan T. Sims, 25, of 20 Christine Road, Middletown, was arrested around 10:10 p.m. Sunday night on a misdemeanor charge of domestic simple assault and battery. According to the arrest report, a family dispute arose involving guests staying at the residence and Sims allegedly grabbed a 33-year-old Middletown resident by the upper arm and held her down on the couch during the argument.

Outstanding Arrest Warrant
Cynthia Mavias Sims, 51, of 196 State St., Apt. 3, Bristol, was arrested around 10:36 p.m. Sunday night on an outstanding arrest warrant issued from the Second District Court in Newport. According to the arrest report, police officers who were in the process of responding to a domestic dispute on Christine Road ran a background check of all people at the residence, which turned up the warrant issued for Sims’ alleged failure to appear for a scheduled court date.
