DCYF Shuts Down Middletown Group Home

The home will be re-inspected today

A group home on Maple Avenue in Middletown, operated by Child and Family of Newport, has been shut down after the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) discovered violations last Friday.

Keith Taveras, Vice President of Institutional Advancement with Child and Family, said although they have not received a complete report from DCYF,  the violations were issues with the facility.  He said many were minor changes that have already been fixed.

“In no way shape or form were any children in any health or safety danger,” said Taveras.

Taveras said the nature of a group home requires continuous maintenance since the children might kick in the walls and windows. He said he was not aware that the home was out of compliance before the inspection.

The home has been open for 144 years and is the largest and oldest social services agency in Newport County, he said.

“We haven’t lasted this long because we treat children poorly,” stated Taveras.  “We have an incredible reputation.”

DCYF is scheduled to conduct another inspection this afternoon.  Taveras hopes to reopen the home as soon as possible.
