Department of Justice Memo Says Medical Marijuana Centers Could Face Prosecution

According to Projo.com and Associated Press, a memo released from the Justice Department says Rhode Island's medical marijuana centers could face prosecution.

A new memo uncovered at the Department of Justice could mean big trouble for the planned medical marijuana center in Portsmouth.

According to Projo.com, the Associated Press has obtained a memo from the U.S. Department of Justice. The memo warns of federal prosecution for "large-scale medical marijauana dispensaries," according to the article.

In early May, Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced he was putting a hold on the opening of three medical marijuana centers, including one in Portsmouth, following a statement made by U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha. 

Neronha reportedly said the cultivation of marijuana in great amounts "violates federal law."

On March 15, the state Department of Health approved an application from to open a medical marijuana center or "compassion center" in Portsmouth. Bock's application for the Greenleaf Compassionate Care Center was among the three applications chosen by the Department of Health on Tuesday for a registration certificate.

Bock, who owns and operates the Newport Acupuncture and Wellness Spa in Middletown, intends to open a non-profit medical marijuana center at 200 Highpoint Ave., Unit B-6.
