Red Equal Sign: Facebook "Paints the Town Red in Support Same-Sex Marriage

Did you change your Facebook page or wear red today to support same-sex marriage?

If you visited Facebook today you likely saw red equal sign.

Many Facebook users changed their profile picture today to a pink equal sign with a red background in support of same-sex marriage. The Human Rights Campaign asked gay marriage supporters to “paint the town red,” wearing red in their wardrobe as well on their Facebook profiles to change to the HRC logo.  The idea has even caught the eyes of Congress, with 13 members showcasing the symbol, according to Ryan Beckwith.

The social media change comes as the U.S. Supreme Court takes up Proposition 8, California’s gay marriage ban.

In 2008, Californian residents voted in support of Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage and reversed a state Supreme Court's decision in support of marriage equality. 

Many Rhode Islanders are watching the arguments closely as the Ocean State considers joining other New England states in legalizing gay marriage. State legislation in support for same-sex marriage has already passed in the House.
