Fire Department To Hold Renovations Forum Next Week

A public forum on the conceptual design for the renovation and improvements to the Middletown Fire Station on Wyatt Road will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 1:00 p.m. at the Middletown Fire Station located at 239 Wyatt Road.  The public is invited to provide input.

After voters approved the bond referendum to finance the renovation project,  Middletown Town Council awarded the design contract to Lawrence Associates. Before the design enters its final phase, Middletown officials said the public would have another opportunity for public input on this project.

Lead architect Rick Lawrence will be available to discuss the current design and take comments from the general public on what the final plan should include. There will be a detailed floor plan and site layout that shows the conceptual design as it is today. Fire Chief Ron Doire, Public Works Director Tom O’Loughlin and Middletown Engineer Warren Hall will be present to discuss the project and answer any questions.

The basic fire station design concept from the 2006 Lawrence Associates study was updated in 2012 to optimize the best use of the existing building including space in the vacant police station. The vacant space will become the new location for the Public Works administrative offices and will also provide office space for the town engineer, the recycling coordinator and Middletown’s parks and recreation director.

Doire says the project will address long identified substandard facility concerns by expanding the size of the current facility and changing the orientation of work, training and office space. The design is expected to provide a more efficient operational facility that takes advantage of more efficient heating, cooling and lighting technology to help control long term utility costs.
