If I Were Middletown Council President...

If I were elected Middletown town council president, the first thing I would do is ______.

Imagine if you were in charge of Middletown. What would you change or improve? Would you lower taxes or more provide more services?

We asked readers on the Middletown Patch Facebook page if they were elected town council president, was is the first thing they would do.

Here is what a few had to say:

  • Tracy Donovan O'Malley pave and repair middletown roads & find a new area for a dump...I hate this pay as you throw..
  • Marian Sarcia pave roads and improve shopping (Target)
  • Mike Nasiff Try to develop an outlet shopping center similar to Wrentham..... def fix many roads and sidewalks / look for ways to add bike paths ..
  • Jill Gower Viveiros Make these construction companies (Mello) cover their damn dirt piles so the dirt and ground up cement are not blowing in my face and mouth when I step outside on a windy day, like today.
  • Joe Cleverdon Open a sailing school at 3rd beach
John Townsend Bring rail to the island.

Political buffs will have to put away the town's charter for a moment. They might explain our president is not actually elected by voters, but appointed by the council. Moreover, the president merely serves as the captain of that elected body; the council as a whole decides policy. The town administrator and his staff are then responsible for the execution of directives set by the seven-member council.  This system is intended to provide checks and balances to our local government.
