Navy Secretary Ray Mabus Addresses International Delegates at Naval War College

The U.S. Secretary of the Navy spoke Thursday morning at the International Seapower Symposium held at the Naval War College in Newport.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus addressed a delegation of naval and coast guard leaders from around the globe Thursday morning at the International Seapower Symposium at the Naval War College in Newport.

More than 170 senior officers from more than 100 countries are attending this week's twentieth International Seapower Symposium (ISS). The biennial event, hosted by the Chief of Naval Operations at the War College, began Wednesday and concludes Friday.

Participants include many of the senior-most officers from their nation's navy or coast guard, according to a statement from the Naval War College Public Affairs Office.

First held in 1969, ISS has become the largest gathering of the world's maritime leaders in history and provides a forum to discuss common challenges and promote international maritime security cooperation, according to the announcement.  

This year's theme is "Security and Prosperity through Maritime Partnerships."

On Wednesday, U.S. Naval War College and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert welcomed more than 220 delegates from more than 100 nations.
