Preview: First Town Council Meeting of 2012

At tonight's regularly scheduled meeting, the Middletown Town Council will vote on whether to endorse an island-wide traffic plan.

A short agenda suggests that the first meeting of the year may be a quick one tonight. A presentation ahead of the meeting, open to the public, is scheduled at 6 p.m., on the topic of the FY 2012-2013 Proposed Department Budget for the Senior Center.

At 7 p.m., the regular meeting is scheduled to begin, with agenda items including:

  • Request from the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission for a formal endorsement of its island-wide traffic management study. Tina Dolen, executive director of AIPC, presented an overview of the study to the Council on Dec. 19, 2011. Developed with participation from Middletown’s Deputy Police Chief Terry Hazel, as well as police department officials from Newport and Portsmouth, and representatives from other state agencies, the study includes a plan for coordinating and improving traffic management and safety during special events, or in response to construction projects and car accidents.
  • Discussion of the term limits for the Wind Turbine Committee. This discussion was continued from the Dec. 19, 2011, meeting. The agenda includes a memorandum from Town Council Vice President Bruce Long with background; of note is the fact that when the committee was established in 2006, to study “the feasibility of using wind turbines to power municipal buildings,” no term limits were set for the committee members, who are continuing to serve with indefinite terms.

The agenda is available on the town's website under "Government>Agendas."
