Councilors Will Discuss Beach Pavilion, Honoring Michael Paranzino and More

Tonight's 7 p.m. meeting includes a presentation from consultants who are studying options for a new Second Beach Pavilion.

A regular meeting of the Middletown Town Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Town Hall tonight, and the docket (available on the town’s website) includes several items of note:

  • Presentation on New Second Beach Pavilion: RKG Associates, the economic planning and real estate consultants who have been hired by the town to develop a business plan for a new Second Beach Pavilion, will give a presentation on their findings to date. For years, there have been discussions in town regarding the need for upgraded facilities at Second Beach, as well as potential business opportunities.
  • Proclamation for Army Sergeant: The Council will vote on a resolution proclaiming Nov. 5 as Michael Paranzino Day, in commemoration of the U.S. Army sergeant and Middletown native who was killed in action on Nov. 5, 2010, while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
  • Request for Wind Turbine Study: Councilor Bruce Long is requesting that the Town Council commission an independent study to “develop scientifically based measures of the impact of wind turbines in Middletown, including the distance required to achieve zero effect for each of the specified impacts.” The impacts include shadow, flicker and noise. Councilor Long is also requesting an extension of the town’s moratorium on wind turbine permits until the study is completed.
  • Report on Stormwater & Sewer Overflow Programs: Woodard & Curran, engineering consultants to the town, will present the findings of reports concerning the town’s programs and options for addressing stormwater discharge and sanitary sewer overflow to satisfy state requirements.
  • Recommendations on Boat Ramp: After conducting a public hearing during the summer and debating the topic at several of its own meetings, the Beach Commission has drafted its recommendations regarding the replacement of the Third Beach Boat Ramp, and is now turning the matter over to the Town Council.
