Preview: Town Council to Consider Island-Wide Traffic Plan

At Monday night's meeting, Middletown Town Council will hear the plan from the Aquidneck Island Planning Committee for addressing traffic during special events.

The Town Council’s last regular meeting of 2011 is scheduled for Monday night in Town Hall, and will begin with a presentation at 6:30 p.m. by Tina Dolen, executive director of the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission. “We are looking for the Town Council’s endorsement of our Aquidneck Island Regional Traffic Management Plan,” said Dolen.

The plan represents a collaborative effort by police departments in Middletown, Newport, and Portsmouth, as well as the State Police, the Rhode Island Dept. of Transportation, and other groups on the Island—who are all seeking ways to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly during special events. Key short term recommendations of the plan are to create a task force and a regional traffic management website, and to coordinate remote parking and electronic messaging, Dolen said.
