Summer Spike in Homeless Cats Spurs Big Adoption Push

The Potter League for Animals recently announced adoption promotions to encourage the placement of older adult cats most affected by the sudden increase.

A sudden spike in homeless cats on Aquidneck Island has prompted the Potter League for Animals to do a big adoption push for adult cats through mid-August.

By Monday, 89 cats were sheltered at the Potter League for Animals, mostly adult cats that are typically harder to re-home compared to kittens, said Christie Smith, Executive Director of the Potter League for Animals, which serves Aquidneck Island and surrounding communities.

"We see more cats this time of year because of the breeding cycle that starts in the spring," Smith said, explaining that more breeding means more kittens, and more available kittens at the shelter means fewer adult cats adopted into new homes.

"This time of year unfortunately the adult cats are staying here longer," said Smith, also noting that it's better for the cats to be placed into new adoptive homes sooner, rather than after longer periods of time. "We have several cats here that have been here longer than 100 days now."

Through mid-August, the Potter League is offering a two-for-one adoption promotion cost for cats six months of age or older for $125. Those six years of age or older may be adopted for a reduced fee of $75. All adopted animals have been spayed or neutered and received age-appropriate shots, and come with a certificate for a veterinarian visit and bag of Hill's Science Diet, according to the Potter League web site.
