Today: Road Construction Begins This Week, SSV Oliver Hazard Perry Forum

  1. Roadwork is scheduled to begin today in Middletown on Valley Road between Griffin Road and Goldenrod Drive as part of the two-year stormwater and roads improvement project made possible through a bond referendum passed by voters last year.
  2. At 6 p.m. tonight, the Alliance for Livable Newport presents a public forum on the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, RI's first Education at Sea school ship: SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. OHPRI's mission is to offer students experiential education on tall ship sail training, marine trade workforce development, as well as marine conservation and environmental stewardship.
  3. At 2 p.m. today, the Middletown Public Library summer reading program presents Loreen Spears’ “Narragansett Stories of My Grandmothers.”

  5. On this day in 1978, the world's first baby conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) was born at Oldham and District General Hospital in Manchester, England. Louise Joy Brown was born to parents Lesley and Peter Brown, weighing in at five pounds, 12 ounces.
