Traffic This Week: Expect Lane Closures on Sakonnet, Mt. Hope Bridges

All operations are weather-dependent and subject to change.

RIDOT Traffic Forecast for Aug. 6 to 12: 

Tiverton: Rte. 24 NB at the Sakonnet River Bridge, right lane closed for construction, Tuesday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bristol/Portsmouth: Rte. 114 on the Mount Hope Bridge, alternating lane closures for bridge construction by the R.I. Turnpike & Bridge Authority, Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Newport/Jamestown: Rte. 138 EB & WB on the Pell (Newport) Bridge, lane closures are possible for painting and steel repairs by the R.I. Turnpike & Bridge Authority, Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At least one lane in each direction will remain open.

Portsmouth/Tiverton: Sakonnet River Bridge (Rte. 24) posted for use by vehicles under 18 tons. Heavier vehicles must use alternate routes.

Sakonnet River Bridge Project

Weekly updates of construction activities impacting local streets will be posted on the RIDOT Web site at www.dot.ri.gov. Local access to homes will be maintained at all times. The following restrictions are scheduled:

Tiverton

  • Riverside Drive may be closed to through traffic for beam placement Tuesday-Saturday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Detour in place.
  • Central Ave. is closed to through traffic. Detour in place.
  • Temporary road connecting Quaker Avenue to Main Road is open.
  • Temporary Tucker Avenue is closed; use new Quaker Avenue Extension or Evans Avenue.
  • Ramp at Exit 5 from Route 24 North has been narrowed, new ramp alignment in effect. Use caution as construction vehicles are crossing from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Route 24 North under Main Road will be reduced to one lane between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. this week for ledge removal.
  • Steel box beam installation will begin on the Tiverton side of the water.
  • RIDOT has applied for a permit to close the center channel for approximately 30 days to install tub girders for the new bridge. If approved by the Coast Guard, the closure will take effect in the latter half of this month.
