Blog: State Website Improperly Used to Endorse Obama. Well Gov. Chafee?

Governor Chafee is misusing a RI government website for blatant political and self-serving purposes. He needs to be called out on it and the practice stopped.

The Internet has forever changed how we communicate with each other. The new media (this site, other blogs, social media, and podcasts) has altered how we consider the traditional media (newspapers, radio, tv) and certainly how we get the news. I turned to the world wide web (www.)'s YouTube to find a video about RI Governor Lincoln Chafee (I-RI)'s address to the Democratic National Convention. That alone is not surprising, millions do it everyday.

What was surprising was the video I found featuring Chafee and President Obama, with the Governor endorsing the President and stating that he would be addressing the DNC's convention yesterday (9/4). At the end of the video "infomercial" I was shocked to read "www.gov.ri.gov" a link to the State's taxpayer paid website.

How can this be? This is a clear violation of partisan, political use of publicly funded resources. I strongly object to it. The date that it was published to YouTube was August 30! The practice is wrong - regardless of party or personality. So much for a higher standard. Stop the practice.

Hey Rene, You really don't understand this whole Internet machine thingy here now do you? Having a URL chyron at the end of a video posted to YouTube wasted exactly zero taxpayer dollars and is a clear violation of absolutely nothing at all. Get a grip dude.

Jeff: This is the clearest, most effective post yet made in this thread. I agree 100%. As an added bonus, I learned a new word ("chyron"). Thanks and please contribute more often.

Darn, I was hoping to read the comments without having the OldTownie weighing in...too much msnbc kool aid for that hippie.

How do you figure your tax dollars were used? Everyone has a cell phone or a digital camera nowadays that can shoot video. The YouTube video was put up by one guy who did it in a few minutes of his own time on his own computer. YouTube is free. Where's the expense to taxpayers?

Again, you offer nothing of value to the conversation.
