Charter Schools Consortium, American Band, Dodgeball, P-Bruins

Here's a look at what's happening in Middletown schools this week.

In Middletown's public schools, a charter schools presentation, Naval War College speakers, the National Honor Society, mentor sessions, the American Band and more happenings are filling up the events calendar this week. At the All Saints Academy, don't miss the deadline to register for a very special luncheon.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The 2011 Rhode Island Public Charter School Consortium will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 1 Sabin Street in Providence from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. The consortium is meant to provide educators, parents, and community members with the opportunity to learn about Rhode Island's 15 public charter schools. Jonathan Kozol, a renowned education and social justice advocate will speak on "The Formidable Challenges and Passionate Rewards of Those Who Teach Our Children." The event is free, but requires pre-registration. Educators who attend this event will receive continuing education credits. For more information, visit www.richarterconference.com.
  • Gaudet Middle School will host the next community Zumba classes on Wednesday, March 2 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, March 9. The program is open to the public ages 18 and older. MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL
  • The 90-Minute Mentors and 90-Minute Café sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 3 from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. to work on homework. The sessions are free and open to all MHS students. Adult volunteers to monitor the program are wanted. For more information, contact Carmela Geer at cgeer@mpsri.net or 418-0071.
  • International Officers from Argentina and Brazil that are currently at the Naval War College will take part in the speaker series featuring international officers on Friday, March 4 at 9:50 a.m. in Room 212. The lecture is open to the MHS community.
  • The National Honor Society dodgeball event will take place in the MHS gym on Friday, March 4 at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public event, but there will be an entry fee with all funds raised going to the charity of choice of the National Honor Society.
GAUDET MIDDLE SCHOOL
  • The American Band will perform on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Middle School band students will take part in some of the performances. The concert is free and open to the public.
AQUIDNECK Avenue SCHOOL
  • Monday, Feb. 28 is Snowcone Reward Day at Aquidneck School.
FOREST AVENUE SCHOOL
  • The Forest Avenue PTG monthly meeting will be held Thursday, March 3 at 6 p.m.
  • Forest Avenue School Night with the Providence Bruins is scheduled for Friday, March 4 when the Providence Bruins take on the Charlotte Checkers at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $14 each and each student will receive a free hat. Contact gilmoreld@cox.net for more info.
ALL SAINTS ACADEMY
  • Reservations for the ASA Grandpeople Luncheon on Thursday, March 17 are now being taken. Aunts, uncles, and grandparents of students are all welcome to attend. Reservations should be made by March 10.  The cost is $5 per person with a maximum of $25 per family. Registration form attached.
