African-American Genealogy

The Friends of Godfrey Memorial Library will be offering a free,introductory program on African-American Genealogy on Saturday October 6,2012 @ 1:00pm.Our guest speaker will be Norma Wright. A resident of Middletown,she is a pharmacist,a librarian and volunteers at the GodfreyLibrary.

     Norma's genealogy research started as a quest to discover or "prove" that her ancestor was an escaped slave.  Her research states include Alabama,Connecticut,the District of Columbia,Michigan,New York,Ohio,Pennsylvania,South Carolina,and Virginia. Her research has discovered in her direct line,and extended family a U.S. Ambassador,a Tuskegee Airman,and a grandmother who sang with Duke Ellington. The surnames she has researched include Wright,Yanc(e)y,Watts,Willis,Green(e),Glover,Churchwell,Holmes and Hughs.

Directions: From I-91N take exit 22Sonto Rt. 9 South,Take exit 15 onto Rt. 66 West(Washington St. at fifth traffic light turn right onto Rt. 3 North (Newfield St.) The library is a quarter mile on the right. From i-95 take exit 69 onto Rt. 9 north. Take exit 15 and follow the above directions.
