Commissioner Gist to Visit Middletown, New Student Registrations, Planetarium Night and More

A look at what's happening in Middletown schools for the week of April 11-16.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • RI Education Commissioner Deborah Gist will hold a public forum about transforming education in Rhode Island on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Gaudet Middle School. All are invited to attend.

  • Planetarium Family Fun Night will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Krupowicz Planetarium at Gaudet Middle School. Attendees will enjoy the Cosmic Collisions Full Dome Show. Tickets are $3 per person or $2 for those 8 and younger. No one under the age of 4 will be admitted. Space is limited to 60 people and is on a first come first served basis.   • There will be a District and School Report meeting on Thursday, April 14 at 6 p.m. in the Oliphant Administration Building to discuss how the NECAP reports are read and how they will impact the future of teaching and learning in the district.

  • New student registration for all students not currently enrolled in Middletown Public Schools is open. To register, parents need to call the administration office at 849-2122 to make an appointment. The child being registered does not need to be present. Appointments are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration forms can be found online.

  • Middletown is accepting registrations for a Vacation Enrichment Program for the April school break for students in grades K-8. The program will include games, arts and crafts, music and more and will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 18 through Thursday, April 21. Students are required to bring lunch, but morning and afternoon snacks will be provided. The cost of the program is $150 and registration must be completed by April 11.   • The Middletown Music Boosters are collecting used band instruments in any condition for the benefit of the music programs at Gaudet Middle School and Middletown High School. Donations can be dropped off at the main office of either school. For more information, call 846-7250.

  • A Zumba Class will be held at Gaudet Middle School on Wednesday, April 13. The program is open to the public and is for ages 18 and older. The classes will be taught by Johanna Lovelace, and the cost is $7. For more information, contact Carmela Geer at 418-0071 or cgeer@mpsri.net.

  • MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL

    • The MHS Program of Studies for 2011-2012 has been released and can be seen in the attached file.

    • There are more than 30 college scholarships with application deadlines that have not yet passed. Check out the complete listing of the scholarships, where to find the applications, and their deadlines here.

    GAUDET MIDDLE SCHOOL

    • All grade 5 students will participate in a Planetarium Session on Tuesday, April 12.
    • The Builder’s Club will meet on Tuesday, April 12 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. This community service program is presented by the Kiwanis Club in an effort to teach students the benefits of giving back to their community and will continue through May 25. This after school program is free and open to GMS students in grades 5 through 8. Registration is required. For more information, contact Carmela Geer at cgeer@mpsri.net or 418-0071.
    • Mentors for the Moment will meet on Tuesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 14 after school in the GMS Library. Members of the MHS National Honor Society will be on hand to help students in grades 5 through 8 with homework. Computer access will also be available. Registration is required.     • Registration for a Tween Yoga Program for students in grades 4 through 8 is now open. The classes will take place on Mondays from May 2 through May 30 and will be taught by Martina Aldrich. Pre-registration is required. The cost of the five-week program is $50. For more information, contact Carmela Geer at cgeer@mspri.net.

    AQUIDNECK SCHOOL

    • The Aquidneck School PTG will meet on Thursday, April 14 at 3 p.m.
    • Boys Monster Golf will take place on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m.

    FOREST AVENUE SCHOOL

    • Spring Picture Day will take place on Wednesday, April 14.

    ALL SAINTS ACADEMY

    • Students from grades 2 and 3 will take part in Building Bridges by sharing their school spirit with local nursing home residents.

    • The MHS Girls Varsity Softball Team will compete against The Prout School on Thursday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
    • The MHS Boys Varsity Baseball Team will compete against Portsmouth High School on Friday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
    • The MHS Girls Junior Varsity Softball Team will compete against Chariho Regional High School on Friday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
    • The MHS Girls Junior Varsity Lacrosse Team will compete against Warwick Veterans Memorial High School on Friday, April 15 at 4:30 p.m.
