Mister Middletown Gets Crowned, Drug Take-Back Program, Scholarship Deadlines

Here's what's happening in Middletown schools this week.

Tonight, Middletown High School students crown a pageant winner. Also this week, the Middletown Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force has two prevention programs underway, while the All Saints students visit a nursing home, Gaudet students journey to the stars, and more.

Here's a look at events, sports and other happenings at Middletown schools this week:

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • New student registration for all students not currently enrolled in Middletown Public Schools is open. To register, parents need to call the administration office at 401-849-2122 to make an appointment. The child being registered does not need to be present. Appointments are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration forms can be found here.
  • The Middletown Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force (MSAPTF) and the Gaudet Parent-Teacher Group are teaming up to offer "Guiding Good Choices," a parent prevention series on preparing for the teenage years while keeping the lines of communication open and creating a stronger family bond. The program is geared toward parents of children in Grades 5 to 8. This is a five-part weekly series which will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning April 27. Dinner will be served and childcare for children over age 4 will be available. Each workshop will offer great door prizes and parents who come to all five sessions will be entered into a raffle to win a gourmet French meal prepared by the former chef of La Petite Auberge.   • National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday, April 30. The MSAPTF in conjunction with the Middletown Police Department and will collect prescription drugs at the from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on this day. In addition, Chief Anthony Pesare, Jean Lilly, Head Pharmacist at CVS-Middletown and Lori Verderosa, Coordinator of the MSAPTF, will speak with seniors on Thursday, April 28 to raise awareness on the abuse of prescription drugs among youths and the need for proper drug disposal.

MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL

  • The Mister Middletown Pageant hits the stage at the Middletown High School tonight at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 and proceeds benefit the sophomore class.
  • The MHS Program of Studies for 2011-2012 has been released and can be seen in the attached file.
  • There are about 30 college scholarships with application deadlines that have not yet passed. Check out the complete listing of the scholarships and their deadlines here.

GAUDET MIDDLE SCHOOL

  • A presentation by Casey Farm will be held in the cafeteria on Tuesday, April 26 from 1 to 2 p.m.
  • All Grade 5 students get to journey to the stars with a special Planetarium Session on Tuesday, April 26.
  • The Builder’s Club will meet on Tuesday, April 26 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. This community service program is presented by the Kiwanis Club in an effort to teach students the benefits of giving back to their community and will continue through May 25. This after school program is free and open to GMS students in Grades 5 through 8. Registration is required. For more information, contact Carmela Geer at cgeer@mpsri.net or 418-0071.
  • Mentors for the Moment will meet on Tuesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 28 after school in the GMS Library. Members of the MHS National Honor Society will be on hand to help students in Grades 5 through 8 with homework. Computer access will also be available. Registration is required.   • Grade 6 students will have an assembly on Thursday, April 28 from 9 to 10 a.m. on the Holocaust Survivors’ Interpretation Presented by the Holocaust Education and Resource Center of Rhode Island.
  • Registration for a Tween Yoga Program for students in Grades 4 through 8 is now open. The classes will take place on Mondays from May 2 through May 30 and will be taught by Martina Aldrich. FOREST AVENUE SCHOOL

  • The FAS Parent-Teacher Group will sponsor "Calling All Chefs" on Wednesday, April 27 from 2:45 to 4 p.m. in the FAS Cafeteria. Students in grades 1 to 3 are welcome to participate in this week’s class on preparing Banana Crepes. Pre-registration is required.
  • The School Improvement Team will meet on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.

ALL SAINTS ACADEMY

  • Students from Grades 2 and 3 will take part in Building Bridges by sharing their school spirit with local nursing home residents on Tuesday, April 26.
