High School Students Can Tour Surface Warfare Officers School

The Newport County Mentor Group is organizing a tour of the Surface Warfare Officers School on March 28. This tour is available to any high school student in Newport County.

The Newport County Mentor/Co-Op Group invites students of Newport County high schools to take a tour of the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) and the Naval War College. The tour will take place at 3:30 p.m. March 28.

For security reasons, the deadline to sign up for the event is next Wednesday, March 14.

SWOS prepares Navy personnel for duty on board surface ships. Students will visit a number of simulators that will demonstrate ship handling, anti-terrorism, and damage control and will be able to “drive the ship” in different situations.

Following the SWOS tour, students will visit the Naval War College.

Presentations will be made on various War College programs. The War College foundation of studies is to create a decision-making environment that fosters education and understanding for military and civilian decision makers in maritime and joint warfare and in generating and debating strategic and operational concepts. War College gaming and simulation methods will be discussed.

The Newport County Mentor/Co-Op Group was three years ago to provide Newport County Students exposure to local companies and career opportunities.

The group has representatives from all of the high schools, public figures and small businesses.

Space is limited for the SWOS tour, so if interested in attending, you may contact your school guidance counselor. Bus transportation will be provided by your school. The tour should end around 5 p.m.
