Does Middletown Have An Upcoming Softball League?

A Patch reader asked if there were adult softball leagues coming up in Middletown. We reached out to the Middletown Recreation Department for the answer.

The answer? Yes.  Sign-ups are open for a league that will begin in May.

This league used to be great. And then Tim Shaw started running it. He puts no effort into it whatsoever. Umpires are no shows some games, the field is always in bad shape, and there is never more than five teams each year because he doesn't try to recruit at all. If you really want to play softball, try the Newport league at Toppa Field.

I agree. The league USED to be a lot of fun back when it was run by people who actually cared and devoted their own personal time to it. It seems that the league went downhill fast when it was appointed to someone as a job. Tim is a nice guy and I by no means want to speak negatively about him, but there is a difference between someone who WANTS to run the league and someone who HAS to. Find someone who wants to run the league and it will flourish. Until then Newport is the only league on the island worth my time.

I have to agree with Localreader. You will rarely find a local softball league in and around RI that is not ran by volunteers. From what I see Tim does the best he can with what he has. I have attended the preseason meetings that everyone no-shows to. I see the league posted on Patch and the NDN. I have also seen it posted on the state softball site. IMO the parks dept should only worry about maintaining the fields. I do play throughout SE New England in various tournaments. That is where the recruiting of teams happens. Adam, this appears to be a good opportunity for you to step up an run the league considering your striong feelings toward it.
