Second Place Middletown Heads Into Final Days of Lifeguard Games

After Thursday night, Narragansett lifeguards lead with 146 points with Middletown close behind with 130 points. The final showdown of the week-long competition happens Saturday evening on Second Beach.

The sun began to set Thursday as a crowd gathered for night four of the 2011 Rhode Island Lifeguard Tournament at East Matunuck State Beach. Some in the crowd were family and friends, but many were lifeguards who came to support their beach’s rescue team.

During the evening’s first event, the ocean rescue, each beach’s lifeguard crew worked as a team to rescue someone from the water as quickly as they could.  Narragansett Town Beach and Westerly Town Beach guards came in neck-in-neck but Gansett pulled ahead by a few feet to take first place as they carried their victim, Victoria Cunningham, to shore.

The night continued with the kayak relay, during which three lifeguards took turns kayaking approximately 200 meters from shore, around three buoys, and back to shore again. Once again, Narragansett took the gold with lifeguards Ryan Celona, Mike Florio, and Tom Hiller paddling fiercely with Roger Wheeler State Beach coming in second place.
