Things to Do This Weekend in Middletown

A look at what's happening in town from August 14 to 15, with a bonus event on Tuesday thrown in— because sometimes a two-day weekend just isn't long enough.

There's something to be said about making the weekend last through Tuesday.

From Aug.13-17, there are some really great events happening locally starting on the weekend and extending into the early work week, so if you've got a song in your heart, a kick in your step, a love for all things old, or a taste for things that grew, you'll find what you're looking for here:

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, Sweet Berry Farm hosts a free Latin fusion concert, Los Sugar Kings, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on its beautiful grassy lawn. Every Tuesday evening during the summer months, Sweet Berry hosts a fun family-oriented concert series. Stop by for a musical adventure on the grass. You can also select to dine at the concert. This week's theme-inspired menu is: Not So Hot Latin Night, with Santa Fe Caesar salad, beef & chicken fajitas, brown rice with roasted corn and poblanos, vegetable empanada, dulce de leche ice cream. The Newport Antiques Show takes place Saturday and Sunday at St. George's School Ice Center, featuring the best the antiques the world has to offer. Now in its fourth year, the Newport Antiques Show brings the nation's leading antique dealers together for a good local cause. All ticket proceeds go to the Newport Historical Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 am to 5pm Sunday. The Aquidneck Grower's Market takes place every Saturday at Newport Vineyards and Winery, 909 E. Main Road, from 9 am – 1 pm. The weekly markets offer an abundance of locally grown, super-fresh produce, meat, cheese, and eggs. Stop by weekly for the freshest produce you can buy. Not sure what to cook when you get home? The Atlantic Beach Club is a great local venue to catch live music—with ocean views. Probable Cause performs there Saturday, August 14 from 2 pm to 4 pm, and Never in Vegas takes the stage Sunday. Atlantic Beach Club has many of the finest bands performing during the afternoon hours. The pavilion also offers dancing, patio cocktails, and beach access where you can take an ocean swim or bump and spike in a beach volleyball match. On Sunday, Newport Martial Arts, 800 Aquidneck Ave., hosts the Central New England Karate Championship Tournament. For more information, call (401) 849-3900 or visit their website. Martial Arts is an exciting spectator sport, continues to increase in popularity, and teaches kids great lessons in discipline, self control, physical fitness, and self-respect. Tournaments like this are a great opportunity for families to check out a martial arts school and speak with other parents to learn more. Newport Martial Arts offers many kinds of martial arts training, including Oki-Ryu Kenpo Karate, Two Swords Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and American Open Sword. There are classes starting at age four all the way to adult-level classes. They also host children's birthday parties.
