Middletown Cub Scouts Win Pack of the Year

Pack 77 of Middletown was chosen from 49 eligible cub scout groups in Rhode Island.

One way to stand out from the pack is to join one.

Boy Scouts of America, Narragansett Council, announced this week that Middletown's Pack 77 has been named the Southeast Area Pack of the Year. Chosen from 49 eligible cub scout groups in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts, Pack 77 was selected for its active and productive year.

Patrick Saxon, community commissioner, saluted the boys' accomplishment. "Pack 77 represents the best that scouting has to offer," he said. "Fun for the boys, involvement for their parents, and service to our entire community."

Pack 77 has had a busy year. The boys marched in the Columbus Day and St. Patrick's Day parades, conducted two food drives, and had overnight adventures at Sturbridge Village and the Roger Williams Park Zoo. The pack entertained area seniors at holiday caroling events, watched the Newport Gulls, Providence Bruins, PawSox and Harlem Globetrotter, conducted a holiday wreath fundraiser and honed their engineering skills by competing in space ship and pinewood car derbies.
