Volunteer Valentine: Second Beach Clean-Up

Here's a worthwhile pre-Valentine's Day activity: Grab your sweetie and head to Second Beach this Saturday, for a clean-up organized by Clean Ocean Access.

Clean Ocean Access will host its 44th coastal cleanup at in Middletown this Saturday, February 11, noon to 2 p.m., according to Dave McLaughlin, head of the Newport-based nonprofit organization.

Anyone interested in taking care of the coastline is invited to help. McLaughlin suggests bringing gloves (to handle beach detritus) and wearing sturdy shoes or boots. COA will provide garbage bags, and arrange for trash to be collected. "It might be cloudy with a little rain or snow, but that won’t stop us," he says.

At the Second Beach clean-up that COA hosted in November, several dozen volunteers scrubbed the beach by hand, picking up such items as fishing line, Styrofoam, plastic wrap, and odds and ends like rugs and lobster traps.

COA, formed several years ago by local surfers concerned about coastal access and water quality, organizes a beach cleanup once a month between September and May.
