Middletown's first female town councilor and council president passed away on Sunday at 89 years old.
Middletown residents and local leaders are reflecting this week on the life and service of this community's first-ever female councilor and council president, June Gibbs, who died Sunday after a two month battle with cancer. She was 89 years old. “She was a wonderful lady,” said current Town Council President Arthur Weber. “Her ethical standards were impeccable.” Gibbs served on the council from 1974-1980 and then again from 1982-1984. After her time on council, Gibbs went on to the Rhode Island Senate, serving until 2008, representing Middletown, Little Compton, and parts of Portsmouth, Newport and Tiverton. Weber said he was inspired by Gibb's patience and passion, that took her from house to house listening to each household’s concerns…

A memorial service for former State Sen. June Gibbs, of Middletown, has been scheduled for this Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at United Congregational Church. Gibbs, 89, died Sunday, April 8, at home, after a two-month battle with cancer. According to the obituary announcement from Memorial Funeral Home, Gibbs was born June 13, 1922 in Newton, MA, to Samuel and Lulu (Glazier) Nesbitt. She graduated from Newton High School in 1939 and Wellesley College in 1943. She served as a lieutenant in the navy during World War II, breaking the German submarine code in Washington, DC. She earned a master's degree in mathematics from Boston University in 1947. June was elected to the Rhode Island state senate in 1984 and served until 2008, over the years…
