A Middletown Preschool To Teach Healthful Living

Bloom is a new preschool/daycare in Middletown that will focus on environmental sustainability and healthful living. Classes will begin next fall.

A Middletown school will soon have a fresh start. When Bethany Stewart heard the owners of the Little Friends School on Mitchells Ln. were not going to renew their lease, she knew it was her opportunity to get back into education and run her own school. The new school is named Bloom, which she said is a dual meaning for the nature-oriented focus of the school as well as the word’s definition. “When we looked up the word in the dictionary, it read, ‘a time or period of greatest beauty,” said Stewart.  “We thought, that is children.”   The school will continue to be a daycare and preschool open to children between the ages of 18 months and five years old.  Although the curriculum will continue to be a Waldorf inspired program, Stewart said …

St. Michael's Student Artwork En Route To Washington, D.C.

Students created an art installation focusing on "hope" to be on display in the nation's capital.

An art installation focusing on the Rhode Island state motto of Hope and the state symbol of an anchor by the seventh grade at St. Michael’s Country Day School will soon be on display in Washington, D.C. Leslie Grosvenor, director of Institutional Advancement at St. Michael’s, contacted Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse's office, knowing the senator's interest and support for art education. St. Michael's art teacher, Leslie Fisk, and middle school English teacher Tami Holden collaborated on a multi-disciplinary project with the seventh grade, incorporating their studies in English and art. After exploring various Rhode Island themes, including landmarks, bridges, Mr. Potato Head, and the Rhode Island Red, they settled on the state motto of Hope. …

Newport County Students to Tour Yacht School

The event is open to all high school students in Newport County. The deadline to sign up is May 11

The Newport County Mentor/Co-Op Group will be hosting a tour for area high school students on May 16th of the International Yacht Restoration School composites shop in Bristol. The event is open to any student in Newport County.   “We are happy to have the group visit IYRS. Our marine systems students are on internship, so upon arrival, we will meet in the systems shop, explain the programs and then break up into groups to tour the composites shop,” said Holly Ashton, IYRS Admissions Associate. “There is a lot going on in the shop right now so this should be a great experience for all.” Students are asked to contact their high school advisors and/or school based coordinator for more information. 'Fun Run' Planned For This Saturday

The Silveira Nursery School is planning a 5K race and 1K Fun Run.

The Silveira Nursery School has a 5K Race/1K Fun Run planned for this Saturday, March 31. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. The headquarters for the event will be at the Silveira School, 143 Peckham Lane, where the race will begin and end. 1K Fun Run:  The 1K Fun Run is for children under the age of ten and will take place on Peckham Lane. The 1K race will begin at 9 a.m. hrs and should not impact area traffic. 5k Race Route: When the race begins at 9 a.m., the runners will travel south on Peckham Lane and then make a left and head east/north on Wapping Road. At the intersection of Wapping Road and Old Mill Lane the runners will make a right and head east on Old Mill. The runners will then turn right onto Indian Avenue …

For Dustin Almeida, Coaching in Middletown Fulfills Lifelong Dream

Middletown High Assistant Football Coach Dustin Almeida says he he knew from a young age that he wanted to become a coach.

Dustin Almeida has wanted to be a coach ever since he was a student himself. “I knew it from jump street.” said Almeida, who is assistant football coach for Middletown High School and a teacher at Gaudet Middle. His resume proves it. Almeida started coaching Middletown students when he was in high school. He served as the assistant coach for Arthur Napolitano, the coach at the time for Middletown’s youth football league, Pop Warner.  “Basically, my job was to hold the clipboard, but I was on my way,” Almeida said with a laugh.   Since then, he has coached ten seasons of Middletown football. In addition to coaching, Almedia teaches health and physical Education at his old middle school, Gaudet.   Almeida graduated from Middletown High …

Head Start Enrolling in Middletown, Newport

The EBCAP Head State program is now enrolling income eligible children from birth to five years old.

EBCAP Head Start is now enrolling income eligible children from birth to five throughout the East Bay area of Rhode Island, including Middletown. Program offerings include: free half day classroom services for preschoolers; free home based services for pregnant women and families with infants/toddlers; and child care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. We offer assistance to families applying for the RI DHS Child Care Certificate.  All programs include the following services: learning activities for young children, parent groups, family fun activities, parenting courses, healthy meals and snacks, family goal setting supported by Head Start staff, health and dental screening, dental services and more.  All services are provided to …

Local Student Seeks Community's Help for Overseas Trip

Lauren Elizabeth Hayes has been selected to participate in the People to People Ambassador Program.

A Middletown student has been selected as one of 40 delegates to represent Rhode Island in the People to People Student Ambassador program this year. Now she's seeking the community's help to make her inclusion in this program a reality. Lauren Elizabeth Hayes writes that the program, started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, allows students in grades 7-12 to travel abroad and interact with people from other countries for the purposes of education and cultural exchange. This particular trip will be to Italy and Greece and will allow the students to work with a community service program, visiting many historical sites including the Vatican and ancient ruins of Greece, Hayes writes. High School Students Can Tour Surface Warfare Officers School

The Newport County Mentor Group is organizing a tour of the Surface Warfare Officers School on March 28. This tour is available to any high school student in Newport County.

The Newport County Mentor/Co-Op Group invites students of Newport County high schools to take a tour of the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) and the Naval War College. The tour will take place at 3:30 p.m. March 28. For security reasons, the deadline to sign up for the event is next Wednesday, March 14. SWOS prepares Navy personnel for duty on board surface ships. Students will visit a number of simulators that will demonstrate ship handling, anti-terrorism, and damage control and will be able to “drive the ship” in different situations. Following the SWOS tour, students will visit the Naval War College. Presentations will be made on various War College programs. The War College foundation of studies is to create a decision-making …

Fifth Grade Golfer Mason Gilman on Par to Become Pro

Fifth grader Mason Gilman has been described as one of the best young golfers to ever come out of the island.

Eleven-year-old Mason Gilman discovered golf at age four by hitting plastic golf balls into his grandfather’s pool.   His grandfather recognized young Gilman's natural talent and interest in the sport, so when he was eight, his grandfather took him to the country club for his first real game. Just three years later, Gilman has developed into what Pat Maher, former board member of Middletown's Wanumetonomy Country Club, describes as “one of the best young players to ever come out of the island.” “He is a great student of the game,” Maher said.   A fifth grader at Gaudet Middle School, Gilman's dream is to eventually make the sport a career. “I would like to get a full scholarship to college, study to become a golf pro and then become a …

PHOTOS: Winter Polo Heats Up Atlantic Beach

The Newport Polo Club's polo ponies kicked up sand this past weekend as part of the Newport Winter Festival.

The Newport Winter Festival's final weekend included two exciting days of polo matches in an unusual location. For the third year in a row, the Newport Polo Club brought two matches to Atlantic Beach in Middletown as part of the annual festival.   More than 100 spectators lined the beach bordering Middletown and Newport to watch two teams face off in this special event. With a Sunday afternoon temperature of 41 degrees, spectators bundled up under blankets and huddled together.  The Newport Polo Team won Sunday's match against the Newport Girls' Interscholastic team, which goes by the nickname "The Pink Ladies."
