Bomb Threat Prompts Police Search at Portsmouth High School

Police searched Portsmouth High School on Monday night after a note was found in the school.

Portsmouth High School students arrived to school on Tuesday morning to police officers patrolling campus after a suspicious note was found in the school Monday night.  The note, according to an e-mail sent out to parents by Portsmouth High School Principal Robert Littlefield, referenced "an explosive device in the building."  Rhode Island State Police and their K-9 team searched Portsmouth High School last night, but discovered no device.  School resumed on Tuesday morning; however, police are on campus this morning as a safety precaution.  Featured here is the e-mail, posted verbatim, which was sent out to Portsmouth High School parents this morning.  I want to alert all members of the Portsmouth High School community of some events …

Middletown Surveillance Business to Provide System For Schools

Portsmouth schools will test out a new surveillance system in response to the shooting in Newtown, CT.

Portsmouth school officials were quick to examine Portsmouth's own security only days after last December's shooting in Newtown, CT.  School officials in Portsmouth immediately looked for ways to increase security after the deadliest school shooting in recent U.S. history.  Nearly six months later, in a decision with Orwellian connotations, the Portsmouth School District will try out a new security system.  The new security system asks teachers to upload photos and videos from their classrooms in the event of an emergency, reports The Associated Press. Portsmouth School Superintendent will then be able to watch the footage and notify first responders, according to the article.  The surveillance system is called VizSafe, which is produced …

If you're going …   more ›
