Monday: Potter League Annual Meeting and National Food Day Launch

A look at what's happening in and around Middletown today.

The Potter League’s Annual Meeting will be held at the shelter at 6 p.m. The meeting will look back at the past year’s accomplishments as well as what is to come over the next 12 months. Light refreshments will be served. Today is the first ever National Food Day, a nationwide effort to support policies that promote healthy, affordable food that is produced in a sustainable and humane way. In Rhode Island, residents are invited to the Statehouse at 10 a.m. to meet with the newly launched Rhode Island Food Policy Council and hear about their release of a comprehensive state food assessment. Beginning Saturday, the Old Colony Railroad tour along Middletown’s scenic west coast runs on a daily schedule for Winter Fest and the school break.  4. Film buffs hoping to catch Oscar contenders before the Academy Awards show on Feb. 27 can find four of those films at the Island Cinemas 10 and Jane Pickens Theatre.   5. Five essentials for Middletowners to know today.

Here's what you need to know about the undefeated Middletown High School girls basketball team, what's being done about wild coyotes, where to find the nearest DMV services (including in Middletown, still!) and great family activities happening today: 1. Aquidneck Island Coyote Summit State Senator Lou DiPalma and Representative Deborah Ruggiero are holding a summit Tuesday night to inform the public about coyote management practices and to hear residents’ concerns about recent problems with coyotes. The summit is scheduled to take place from 7 to 9 p.m in the Gaudet Middle School cafeteria.
