According to Newport police, 94 people were either arrested or cited on St. Patrick's Day weekend. Last year, more than 70 people had run-ins with the police. In 2011, 95 people were either cited or arrested on parade day. Most of the arrests were for alcohol-related charges. As of 9 a.m. Monday morning, police reports were still being processed and some are still not complete. Patch will update these figures as information becomes available. No Bad Deed Goes Unpunished A Cranston man tried to be a good Samaritan this week after returning a purse he found at Stop & Shop on Atwood Avenue. And by “found,” he reportedly really meant “stole.” According to police, the 26-year-old man stole a purse from a woman at the grocery store and fled. The victim was injured in the pursuit after being dragged by the man’s car, leaving her with broken bones, cuts, bruises and road rash. Whether it was the guilt that got the better of him or not, the man walked back into the store shortly after and tried to return the purse, saying that he had found it. The Middletown Police Department reported the following recent arrests: Marijuana Possession Carlos Viveiros, 35, of 345 Warren St., Apt. 1, Fall River, MA, was arrested around 1:47 a.m. Wednesday on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession. According to the arrest report, Middletown police stopped the car he was driving on Coddington Highway due to a faulty rear brake light. During questioning, a police officer allegedly observed rolling papers inside the car and the driver informed the officers that he had smoked a marijuana joint one day earlier in the car and then handed over its remains. The Middletown Police Department reported the following recent arrests: Disorderly conduct and resisting arrest George M. Friedlander, 23, of 250 College Park Road, Fall River, MA, was arrested around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. According to the arrest report, a patrol officer stopped the car Friedlander was driving on the 80 Block of Valley Road after observing a headlight out, loud exhaust and the car switch lanes without using a turn signal, nearly cutting off the police cruiser. Disorderly Conduct Two 14-year-old Middletown High School students were arrested around 12 p.m. Thursday on misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges. According to the arrest reports, police were called to Middletown High School just before noon on Thursday for a fight between two male students that ended with them wrestling on the ground before faculty broke up the fight. Three Middletown teens allegedly called the victim over to the park, then kicked, beat and chased the 16-year-old as he fled back to his home and blacked out on his own lawn.

Three 15-year-old Middletown teens have been arrested on misdemeanor charges of simple assault or battery after the boys allegedly attacked a 16-year-old Rogers Lane youth who was riding his bike by a park Wednesday afternoon. Loman was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Monday on misdemeanor charges of obstruction of a police officer in execution of duty and driving with a suspended or revoked license. According to the police report, a police officer on patrol on West Main Road observed the registration plate and inspection sticker on Loman's 1999 Jeep Cherokee partially obstructed and initiated a car stop near West View Road. Campbell, 26, of 45 Marion Ave., Narragansett, was arrested around 6:39 p.m. Tuesday night on a felony charge of heroin possession. According to the arrest report, Middletown police and fire department rescue workers had responded to the parking lot at West Marine on West Main Road for a report of man in a car not breathing. Campbell was doing chest compressions on the unconscious man when emergency workers arrived, ordered him to stop and took over treatment for what first appeared to be a seizure.
