Coffee Chat: Time with Middletown Town Council President Art Weber

Patch recently sat down for coffee with Art Weber, Town Council President, to learn about his background and his priorities as leader of the Council.

“I like to be in charge. I trained for that for three decades” - Art Weber, Middletown Town Council President  Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Art Weber came to Middletown, and later the Middletown Town Council, after a long history of military service. Weber, who currently serves as Town Council President, recently sat down to reflect on his past and his hopes for our community going forward. A History of Service Weber retired to Middletown in 1996 after 32 years in the military. He ended his career as a Colonel in the Marine Corp for the U.S. Naval War College.   He describes his military duty as more than just a career, but a calling.    “I remember as a little boy watching the ships come back from World War II,” Weber reflected. “After a few…

Mr. Presidemt you are out of touch....the school department is always willing to work with the Town Council. Furthermore, Tina do you really know or care what the superintendent and assistant superintendent do? Why don't you inquire and Art, it's time to be a team player, not "be in charge" cause you like it...be a real leader!   more ›

Town Council Votes Down Zoning Change for Retail Center

The land eyed for a retail center will remain zoned for light industrial commercial purposes.

The Middletown Town Council and the town's planners want to see light industrial and trades businesses on Omni Drive off West Main Road. There was no mincing of words Monday night when the Town Council voted 6-0 against changing the light industrial zoning for the 28-acre parcel to a general business designation that would have enabled a proposed retail center with a large anchor store configuration to go forward. The vote was made with Councilor Ed Silveira recusing himself. At the Second Reading of the zoning request, Council President Art Weber opened discussions by reading off a historical timeline of the proposed Omni Drive retail project that dates back three years. He noted requests, actions, Planning Board decisions and more. In …

Middletown Town Council Delays Roundabouts Decision

Middletown Town Council President Art Weber asked for a continuance following a Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) presentation about the proposal, and after hearing from several residents for and against it.

Middletown residents with opinions or questions about proposed traffic circle roundabouts for West Main Road have at least several more weeks to weigh in or learn more about the proposed project before anything’s decided. The Middletown Town Council on Monday night delayed taking a vote until the next meeting in August, at the earliest, to decide whether new traffic signals with realigned turning lanes or roundabouts should be placed at two West Main Road intersections. With two council members absent from Monday night’s public discussions, which followed a Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) presentation, Town Council President Art Weber asked that the council put off further discussions and decisive actions until the next …

VIDEO: Town Council Honors School Committee Chairman Michael Crowley

The Town Council recognized School Committee Chairman Michael Crowley Monday night after he received a prestigious award for outstanding service from the Rhode Island Association of School Committees.

Last month, the Middletown Town Council decided to wait to issue a proclamation to honor the outstanding service of School Committee Chairman Michael Crowley. Instead of holding the ceremony in the Middletown High School cafeteria at a public budget hearing, the council members explained how Crowley deserved something better; they wanted to honor him in the Town Hall Chamber with a televised meeting, for his tribute to be shared with more people in the community. On Monday night, the Town Council did just that, with President Art Weber presenting an overview of several decades worth of accomplishments of Crowley, who last month received the prestigious Howard Kay Award. Each year, the Rhode Island Association of School Committees' annual …
