Letter: VonVillas Supports Second Beach Pavilion Bond Referendum

Councilor Barbara A. VonVillas says while she does not support increasing debt, she believes voters should decide.

To the Editor, On Monday, April 2, the Middletown Town Council will consider a proposal for a November 2012 bond referendum to support a new Second Beach Pavilion. I do not support increasing debt at this time, but I can appreciate the passion of Mr. Semonelli and the Beach Commission for a new structure that is badly needed, and I will support the proposal because I believe the voters should have the opportunity to weigh in on this important issue. Similarly, I have proposed three additional questions for the November ballot, none involving the expenditure of funds, but all asking the voters to express their wishes regarding issues that have been deadlocked at the Town Council level for more than three years. 1. Thank you for the clarification. You almost lost my vote. This town needs to fund “Must Have” items and stop paying for “Nice to Have” items. I'm not real fond of paying more property taxes so out of town beach goers can enjoy a new beach pavilion. Taxes are insanely high in this town and enough is enough.   more ›

VIDEO: Town Council Honors School Committee Chairman Michael Crowley

The Town Council recognized School Committee Chairman Michael Crowley Monday night after he received a prestigious award for outstanding service from the Rhode Island Association of School Committees.

Last month, the Middletown Town Council decided to wait to issue a proclamation to honor the outstanding service of School Committee Chairman Michael Crowley. Instead of holding the ceremony in the Middletown High School cafeteria at a public budget hearing, the council members explained how Crowley deserved something better; they wanted to honor him in the Town Hall Chamber with a televised meeting, for his tribute to be shared with more people in the community. On Monday night, the Town Council did just that, with President Art Weber presenting an overview of several decades worth of accomplishments of Crowley, who last month received the prestigious Howard Kay Award.
